In the treacherous winter season of Siberia, Russia, where danger looms for both humans and animals, a small cat named “Dymka” (meaning “fog” in Russian) fell victim to the harsh weather. The extreme cold took a devastating toll on Dymka, resulting in the loss of her limbs and putting her life at stake. However, with the intervention of compassionate veterinarians and cutting-edge technology, this resilient feline was able to regain her ability to walk.
A kind-hearted motorist came across a tiny kitten wandering the icy streets of Novokuznetsk in Siberia. Determined to help, the compassionate individual brought the cat to a clinic in Novosibirsk, the city bearing the same name. Upon examination, it became evident that Dymka had suffered frostbite on all four paws, her tail, and ears, likely due to prolonged exposure to the unforgiving Siberian winter.
Dymka’s condition upon reaching the clinic was so critical that the only option was to amputate both her front and rear legs. However, the clinic’s skilled team joined forces with experts from TPU (Tomsk Polytechnic University) to embark on an extraordinary journey of innovation. Their collaboration resulted in the creation of titanium prosthetics for the resilient 4-year-old cat, allowing her to walk once again and reclaim a normal feline life.
The groundbreaking process involved utilizing state-of-the-art technology, such as CT scans of Dymka’s paws, along with the application of calcium phosphate. Additionally, 3D-printed titanium implants were meticulously crafted and affixed to the cat’s leg bones. The initial implants were successfully placed in her front legs, followed by a similar procedure on her hind legs. After a span of over six months, Dymka regained nearly full mobility with her titanium legs.
A video shared by the clinic that treated her showcases Dymka stretching, walking, and playing with remarkable ease, as if she had never experienced the loss of her limbs. The titanium legs, featuring a flexible structure and textured black surface, have provided her with a newfound sense of freedom and independence.
It is notable that Dymka is the second feline worldwide to undergo such a groundbreaking surgical procedure. The first cat, named Ryzhik, also lost her limbs and received a similar operation to restore her mobility back in 2016.
